THE FILM
Nocturnal is a short horror written and directed by the award-winning Esther S Conroy, following a woman’s crumbling sanity after a break in.

After a traumatic break-in to her apartment resulting in all her sentimental family photos being stolen, Cara becomes obsessed with cleaning and being clean to wash away the presence of the intruder. This violation of her space which she thought was safe deeply disturbs Cara and, as well as developing compulsive self-destructive behaviour, she also begins to sleepwalk.
She can't explain the things she sees and hears while she is awake, and she can’t discern if it is her traumatised mind inventing things, or if something more sinister is happening. What Cara doesn’t realise is that she is being watched by an intruder who never left.

Nocturnal explores themes of mental illness, paranoia, fear of the unknown, and violation of self.

WHY
The most disturbing films are the ones which play on base fears. Things like being watched, being isolated, going insane and films which turn the ordinary into something horrific. I want to make a film that is disturbing and will stay with an audience after they leave the theatre. The best films in the genre are the ones which make you question yourself and your own safety, something that's the focus of Nocturnal's creation.

Unfortunately, the horror genre is notorious for objectifying and sexualising women. As a woman who loves horror, this always throws me when I am watching a horror film. I also want to make this film to show that you can have a horror film with a primarily female cast that is disturbing but isn’t filmed with the male gaze. I want to get into the roots of what makes something scary and I don’t think that should come from unnecessary shots of an overly sexualised woman. I hope in Nocturnal that I can make it disturbing and unsettling and have female characters that are complex rather than objectified and two-dimensional.
